A legendary bright light of the criminal defence bar, Marie Henein, has been chosen as the 2023 recipient of the country’s top legal award – the G. Arthur Martin Medal.

The Martin Medal recognizes outstanding, lifetime contributions to the criminal law. Ms. Henein will receive the award at a special awards luncheon on November 18, 2023.

The presentation will include:

  • Welcome and introduction by Daniel Brown, President, Criminal Lawyers' Association
  • Presentations by several prominent legal professionals, colleagues and friends of the recipient to tell you more about Marie Henein and her achievements
  • Presentation by Marie Henein.

Previous winners of the medal include G. Arthur Martin himself, John Robinette, Edward L. Greenspan, Marlys Edwardh, and James Lockyer as well as former Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justices Antonio Lamer and Beverley McLachlin, along with prominent justices from all levels of the judiciary and defence counsel from across the country.

Join us on IN-PERSON November 18, at 1 to 3 p.m. at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel, 525 Bay Street, Toronto, ON over lunch.

  • CLA member: $45 plus HST
  • Non-member: $65 plus HST
  • Table of 10: $450 plus HST: Open to members and non-members. Please make sure table guests have not already purchased a ticket as there are no refunds if so.
There are no refunds.

  1. We highly recommend all in-person attendees be fully vaccinated.
  2. The venue will be following all local government protocols. Refer to https://covid-19.ontario.ca/public-health-measures
  3. Stay home if you feel unwell or are exhibiting any COVID-19 symptoms. If unwell, we ask you to complete a COVID-19 test and quarantine until a negative result is confirmed. If needed, COVID-19 tests can be purchased locally. Please note, with currently circulating COVID-19 variants, it is common for rapid tests to be unable to detect COVID-19 until several days into infection – hence even if you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 and are testing negative, please do not attend.
